The history of the Château de Valon, fortress of Aveyron

The Château de Valon dates from the 12th century and was built by the Valon family, a noble line that controlled the area. Like many medieval fortresses, it was used to protect the land and to monitor the passage.

Over the centuries, the castle changed owners and was strengthened to better withstand conflicts. It suffered notably the troubles of the Hundred Years' War and the wars of religion. However, with time and the evolution of military technology, it lost its defensive utility and ended up being abandoned.

From the eighteenth century, the castle is gradually abandoned and falls into ruin. It remained long forgotten until it was rediscovered and restored in the 20th century by heritage enthusiasts.

Today, the castle of Valon is open to the public, allowing visitors to discover its imposing keep, its walls and enjoy an exceptional panorama over the valley. Its medieval atmosphere makes it a must for history and old stones lovers!

The ghost of the dead knight
One of the most recounted legends concerns the appearance of a knight in armor. According to the stories, he is the wandering soul of an old lord of the castle who was killed in a battle or duel. Visitors say they saw a dark silhouette near the walls or heard metallic noises, like armor clanging in the dark corridors.

Some say they heard whispers and voices from the upper floors or tower. These unexplained noises were allegedly attributed to prisoners or people sentenced to death who shouted in their last moments.

Witnesses also reported seeing unusual lights at certain hours of the night, especially near the chapel or the main gate. Some believe that these lights come from ancient torches lit by the ghosts of knights or past inhabitants.
